How Did We Do?

Herminia Gabrillo Onasa was born November 28th, 1946 in Cebu City, Philippines. Herminia was the eldest daughter of Ernesto and Elpidia Onasa. She was later joined by her brother Ernesto Jr., and two sisters Melinda and Silvia.

Herminia and her family made their way to Manilla. She enrolled into the University of the East and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Major in Accounting. While in Manilla she met her future husband Noel S. Yumo. They went on to get married on April 15, 1970.

Noel Yumo immigrated to the United States on June 23th 1971. A month later on July 24, 1971 Herminia joined him in Seattle, WA. On September 27, 1971 Noel joined the United States Air Force. Less than a month later, they welcomed their first born, Noel S. Yumo Jr.

As a military wife, she traveled with her husband from Seattle to Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota. After several years, they continued on to Clark Air Force Base, Philippines. While in the Philippines, Herminia gave birth to their second son, Roel Yumo.

Herminia traveled with her family to several other Air Force bases before returning to the Pacific Northwest. The family settled in Federal Way in 1991 where Herminia resided ever since. While living in Federal Way, Herminia worked at Western Equipment for over 20 years and watched as her children graduated from college.

Ultimately Herminia was many things at different points in her life. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a partner and co-pilot, a coworker, a friend, a counselor, and a confidant. But however someone knew her, everyone saw that she was a good person. Everyone recognized that she had a special kind of kindness. The type of kindness that breaks down guards and barriers. She simply accepted others for who they were. And whoever they were - she loved fully and with all her heart.

Herminia is survived by her husband, Noel Yumo Sr.; sons Noel Yumo Jr. and Roel Yumo, daughter-in-law Emily Yumo and two grandchildren Joelle and Grayson Yumo.

Nan was the most kindhearted person I have ever met. It was a privilege to work with her and to be a friend. She was always so willing to help at work. She was so thoughtful and would even give me little gifts to give my granddaughter. She made us laugh so many times when she would tell us about her family times. She was a joy to talk to. She will be greatly missed by all of us. Praying for all the family through this tough time.

CandleNan was a wonderful, funny, nurturing soul and she will be greatly missed. The gang at Western Equipment was blessed that we were able to work with Nan. And not just for her great salsa she would make and bring to us! She was a positive light in all our lives! Our thoughts and prayers are with Nan's family.
God Bless,
Carol & Doug Scherer
