How Did We Do?

Ethel Catherine (Hines) Marzolf passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones on July 18, 2017 at the age of 89 years young. Born May 9, 1928 to parents Martin (Matt) Hines and Ethel Donahoe, of Seattle. Siblings: James, Regina Phelps, Vincent Hines, and Theresa Winslow. She spent her early years at Sacred Heart Villa attending school at St. Michaels in Laurelhurst and then graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1946.
It wasn't too long after graduation that she met and married the love of her life, George. They married November 28, 1947 and lived in the Seattle area until moving to the farm in Bothell where they continued to raise their children. Ethel and George had 5 children; Elaine Good, Linda Hale, George Maier ( deceased), Georgi Larsen, and Ethel Marie Marzolf as well as 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Ethel spent her life as a homemaker always being there to lend a sympathetic ear or words of encouragement when needed. She loved life, family and friends and was very proud of her Irish heritage. She was active in her church and volunteered at the Crisis Clinic for several years helping others find their way to resources. Raised during the Depression years she valued the need for community and charity to many.
She was the life of the party and always told a good joke. She loved entertaining and having family and friends over for the holidays. Monday night bowling, Saturday night poker games and Sunday's at Longacre's was how she liked to spend her free time. These activities and more helped her to foster lifelong friendships. When George retired they were introduced to Lake Havasu Arizona, their retirement mecca for which they would grow to love and spend the majority of their time. They built a beautiful house high on a hill overlooking the lake and mountain range. After George passed away in 2002 Ethel continued to spend her winters in Havasu as she felt closer to him there.

She is preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, son, brothers and sisters as well as her dear sister-in law Patty.
Her children and husband were her life. We were blessed to have such a loving and caring mom. We will all miss her dearly.

A Celtic Prayer for you mom:
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there... I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow...
I am the diamond glints on snow...
I am the sunlight on ripened grain...
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you waken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of gentle birds in circling flight...
I am the soft star that shines at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry-
I am not there... I did not die...

CandleMy grandma was an Irish spit fire. I love my memories from childhood. She made Christmas a real life fantasy. I really believed in santa and the Easter bunny and little lepra cons. My grandma would wake us up in the middle of the night saying hohoho at the bottom of the stair case that was very believable to a little child. Of course my grandpa was playing along right with her. They both went out of there way to make each holiday very magical. I loved kittens and animals and they always had plenty each year for me to play with. We had the river and cow fields to keep our imagination running wild. I loved having Easter egg hunt in her huge yard which she always had silver dollars in some of the eggs. She had grand party's all the time which I always enjoyed. I have many fond memories. I used to go to the race tracks with her on Sundays and she would place 2 dollar bets for me. She once baby Sat me and my brother one weekend when my mom was out of town. My brother and I held a huge party . My grandma was so cool about it. She Sat upstairs and drank vodka. The kids I invited loved her so much they hung out with her and told me what a cool grandma I had. She wasnt mad at all. My grandmother had a beautiful man taking care of her and his family. She had the dream life. One which we all would be so blessed to have. I will miss her terribly. I can't wait to see her and my grandpa on the other side greeting me at gate. I love you nanna! Tell everyone I said hi and I miss them. Have fun playing poker and bowling in your league. Love Mia.
