How Did We Do?

Ronald Richard DeVore Sr. (Papa Ron) passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, in his home on January 19th, 2018. Born on September 18, 1936, Papa Ron passed away at 81 years of age. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Christian Faith Center, 33645 20th Ave S, Federal Way, WA 98003. Memorials may be made to World Outreach Ministry Foundation (WOMF.org) - founded by Papa Ron and his wife, Shirley DeVore.

Papa Ron is survived by his wife, Shirley, and his five children: Vivian Holaday and her husband Robert, Ronald DeVore Jr. and his wife Mary, Michael DeVore and his wife Holly, Timothy DeVore and his wife Lori, Cindy Byers and her husband Bryan, two foster children: Steve Carpenter and his wife Deena, Debra Hartman and her husband Patrick, nineteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, his sister Iris Brockway (DeVore), and his brother Mark DeVore.

Prior to the African mission, Papa Ron and Mama Shirley founded a youth home in Federal Way, Washington, during the 1970s, called the Stonehouse. Over the course of many years, Ron and Shirley provided a loving family environment in the Stonehouse for hundreds of teens - most of them who still fondly claim Ron and Shirley as their unofficial adopted parents.

Papa Ron was preceded in death by his beautiful baby daughter, Susan DeVore, his parents, Norman Richard and Annie Laurie DeVore, his step-mother Ethel Saxby, his brothers, Norman and John DeVore, his sisters Rebecca DeVore, Lorraine Johnson (DeVore) and Patricia Jorstad (DeVore), and by his granddaughter, Sarah DeVore, and great-grandsons, Jacoby DeVore and Israel Hartman.

Papa Ron spent his final years battling Alzheimer's and was lovingly cared for, to the end, by Mama Shirley, his wife of 63 years and ever-loyal best friend. The DeVore family is grateful for the care provided by Dr. Bradley Schmitz - a longtime friend of the family and dedicated supporter of World Outreach Ministry Foundation (WOMF.org).

Papa Ron's passion in life was to serve God, love his family and to help those who could not help themselves. Starting in the 1950's--as a 15-year old, preaching and singing the gospel to the homeless on the streets of Seattle - Papa Ron was destined to be a preacher and to take the gospel around the world. Ultimately, he founded World Outreach and set up missions in Africa, Bangladesh and the Philippines.

Papa Ron's family will always remember his great sense of humor, his handsome looks and dapper-style of dress, his unsatisfied quest for fun and adventure, his never-ending love and support for each of his children and their families, and his absolute commitment to our Heavenly Father.

Those wishing to sign Papa Ron's guestbook may do so by clicking on the tribute tab above.

I met Ron and Shirley my last year of Bible College. He was a good friend and encourager. I remember him as a man of faith. It was my privilege to translate for him several times in Mexico and Spain. He also sang at our wedding. He has gone to his reward. Well done, you good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.

You gave us the right understanding of a Godfearing, people loving Christian.. For me you were really the first Mzungu I met and saying you are part of my destiny since would be an understatement.
You and mama Shirley are one couple of a kind....Let your legacy live on through me and many others whose lives you impacted so strongly.

Ron and Shirley have long been role models and inspirations to us. We met Ron and Shirley in January 1996 when they blessed us by visiting our church in southern California. Jamie was so blessed to spend three weeks teaching music to staff and volunteers in Uganda in August of that year. Ron and Shirley and the rest of our dear sisters and brothers in WOMF continue in our prayers.

Few people in this world have the calling of God, and acted upon that calling, like Ron and his wonderful wife Shirley. He obeyed and loved God with his whole heart, mind, soul, and strength, and loved his neighbors (all of us) as himself. My husband, Ron, and I marveled at the open heart and sweet spirit Ron had every time we met him. He was always so enthusiastic and excited to tell us how God was touching and changing so many lives! He influenced so many because of a surrendered life. What is so wonderful is that Ron and Shirley were both called and gave their lives to serve our Lord. Thank you both. Yes, I am certain Ron was welcomed into heaven with Jesus' open arms and hearing "Well done, Ron, you good and faithful servant: you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things: enter into the joy of your Lord." Our condolences to the DeVore family. Ron and Shirley leave a great legacy in their extended family, and many, many friends, along with the continued work being done in the World Outreach Ministries . Until we meet again.... Ron and Sue VanSlooten, Federal Way, WA.

Papa Ron has been one of the few men in my life that I think of as a hero. To me, he embodied the life of a man happily consumed with the love of God and the love of people - everywhere. He was "the real deal" of a man. He will be greatly missed but so many will see him again because of his efforts for Messiah!

Alan and Janet Broadstock on Feb 3, 2018

We will always have such loving and happy memories of Ron. He was a wonderful example of love, grace and forgiveness and we are so grateful for having known him as a friend and confidante.

I fondly called him grandpa and grandma Shirley, after I met their granddaughter Annie Culp she became my adopted sister.
I lived in their house for four years, they sent me to High School and Bible college and wedded me with my beautiful wife Robinah.
They brought us with them to USA for a long Honey moon of 6 months.
Grandpa taught me to be a man of God, taught me to love family.
I am who I am because I met both of them.
I will always miss the quality time we used to spend together talking about everything.
You opened my eyes to the world.
Your passion for God and ministry caught me like a fire. I will spend my life trying to imitate you.
You loved me without reservation. I can't wait to see you again in eternity.
I will always keep the sweet memories of you. Can't say enough about you grandpa. Love you always

I am so full of grief for the incredible loss of Papa Ron to his family and the world. My love and prayers for you all. Ron was truly a man of God, a saint who has now gone on before us.
Thinking of you all especially mama Shirley. Love you.

I met Papa Ron after my first trip to Uganda in 2005. God was putting a call on my life, & someone who knew Ron suggested I ask to meet with him. He was only home for two days, but took an evening to meet with me. He started the conversation by saying, "How can I serve you?" It brought tears to my eyes then and still does. It was so characteristic of who he was. Eventually an organization named HEED was birthed from my Call, & UCOM became our "big brother" in Uganda. I doubt we would have made it without their helping hand. Ron's example has had a profound impact on my life. I feel privileged to know such a surrendered saint. See you in heaven, Ron! I'm sure there will be a crowd around you of the lives you touched. Well done, good & faithful servant!

Linda Brockway on Jan 29, 2018

Uncle Ronnie has been a blessing to me personally ever since I married into the Brockway/DeVore family - always warmly accepting, loving, encouraging, and inspiring me to serve Christ with my whole heart. We all watched his life closely and that caused a ripple effect to follow Christ with passion and zeal. I'm sure he's having a wonderful time visiting in heaven with my sweet husband, Gale, who also deeply admired him. Love you, Aunt Shirley.

He is home resting w Jesus and singing praises like never before . He will be missed by countless people but left a foundation for his family friends and all of Africa to continue the good work. He was my youth pastor and never have I seen such an active youth group , he encouraged us to go out and tell others of Christ light I remember going out w flyers handing them out , going to baseball games , missions trip to Mexico on and on . The churches no longer engage the teens and children like he and only he did . Between him and pastor dave we were all soo taken care of spiritually and loved that it is hard to find a church now . As they were true stewards of the Lord and keeping us all excited about church and most of all Jesus . My condolences to the whole family as your loss is huge and to the rest of us also who have been touched by his life and love for God love dhebi

Shirley DeVore on Jan 29, 2018

My sweetheart, I will always love you. After 63 wonderful years , there was never a dull moment. My life was filled with our own children and all those that God-gave to us around the world . You always obeyed the calling of God. Your heart was pure, you could never do enough for the children of this world. Sleeping in a tent on a primitive island in Uganda he would sing to me, "I'll go to the end of the world for you" and I asked are we there yet? My life was a great adventure. I have no regrets. I am a blessed woman. Thank you so much.in God's time we will be together again.

I am his firstborn and so blessed to call him Daddy. I will miss him so much! I think of him everyday. So many wonderful memories of Holidays, travel, playing games, putting together puzzles, eating, barbecues, motorcycle trips, listening to him preach, pray, prophecy, sing, read, recite scripture! Mom and dad spent their lives on behalf of others! Dad touched so many lives during his lifetime! What an amazing man oh God! I love you, Daddy! I miss you!

Lori DeVore on Jan 28, 2018

He was 'Dad' to many teens including myself. He used up all of his energy and resources- nothing was wasted. Hard work, intelligence and humor were the characteristics that made him successful. He will be missed.
