How Did We Do?

A member of Saint Madeleine Sophie Catholic Parish, Wendy joined her Lord on Saturday January 8, 2011 after an unexpected short illness. She passed away peacefully at home in Bellevue, WA. shortly after her beloved Seahawks won their Wild Card Game. She was surrounded by things she loved most; her children, home, music and garden.

Born in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania March 18, 1927; she was the eldest daughter of A. Peter Kanjorski and Wanda (Nedbalski) Kanjorski, she was predeceased by her parents and maternal grandmother Mary Telejszo Nedbalski. Wendy is survived by her daughters: Deborah (Jerry) Coberly, Christina (Louis) Mollinary and son Peter (Lisa) Workman; her grandchildren: Wendy (Ivan) Cowger, Kristin Coberly and Brooks and Mitchell Workman, and her great grandchildren: Morgan, Catherine and Marsh Cowger; two sisters: Aloise Zavoy and Charmaine (John) Aponick; two brothers: A. Peter (Nancy) Kanjorski and the Honorable Paul (Nancy) Kanjorski and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cousins Raymond (Virginia) Chase.

Wendy graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1944, attended the University of Pennsylvania before graduating from Marywood College. She later received her Masters of Education from the University of Maryland. She continued her education in the Northwest taking classes at Bellevue Community College and the University of Washington.

She lived throughout The United States before establishing her residence in the Pacific Northwest in 1973. While living in Bellevue, Washington she continued her life long career in education as a substitute teacher well into her 70's. Wendy received her Real Estate License, worked in the NW Tourism Industry and as a facilitator for the Boeing Company.

Her club memberships reflected her love of education, nature and politics. In her earlier years she was active in Girl Scouts of America. Wendy was a member of AAUW, Marywood College Alumni and the University of Maryland Alumni. She belonged to the Audubon Society, Red Hat Society, Boeing Ski Bacs, Hostelling International and Issaquah Alps Trail Club. Wendy had a passion for traveling, athletics and gardening. She visited Europe with the Boeing Ski Bacs and her favorite ski resort was Sun Valley. Her love of sports started with the Washington Redskins and then continued here in the Northwest with the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Huskies and the Seattle Mariners.

Her presence will surely be missed, but her spirit will live on in all of us.

I am almost embarrased to say that now I know her name. She was always known as Debbie's Mom Jerry's Mother in Law or Kristins Grandma. I never knew her by Wendy.

Wendy was always in a hurry, always on her way to womewhere, or coming back from who knows where. How do I know this? I would see the blue Mercedes two or three times a week. Either in front of me, beside me at a stop light, and sometimes behind me at a stop light or coming up fast in my rear view mirror. Not the best place to be, because you knew she was in a hurry to get someplace important. Wendy's Mercedes was like the Garden Gnome of automobiles. You would see it all over Bellevue.

Her driving skills were remarkable for her young age. I winnessed Wendy in a left hand turn lane one day and I was two cars back, when she shot forward like a rocket and proceeded to go straight not left, so the guy in the car next to her had a chance to try out his brakes at the last minute, and avoided scratching her beautiful Mercedes. He proceeded to follow her home while honking his horn and blinking his lights, but Wendy wasn't fazed, and continued on home like nothing Happened. I followed her home and I think the guy realized he was being followed by me and made a good choice of calling off the chase. I would hate to think what could have happened if he had confronted Wendy about her driving skills.

I know this isn't about the Mercedes, but it served her well, and she had a certain glow about her every time I saw her drive by. I'm not sure, but I think I saw her talking to her car a few times. It probably went something like this. Ok, just one more trip to the store, and I will get your muffler replaced, I promise.

Happy motoring Wendy!
