How Did We Do?

June Young was born in Sequim Washington on December 8th, 1923 as June Ford to meager beginnings. Although her father Harry Ford was poor his heritage came from English wealth and was heir to the Ford Castle in England, though he never was able to claim the castle because of the lack of money. Harry Ford married Viola Jarrett. They had five children; Thelma, Frieda, Russell, June, and Shirley. June was very close to her brother Russ and would often follow him into the woods while he would hunt for food for the family.
When June was very young she picked cotton along with her sisters and mother to make money for the family. She also worked in fruit orchards picking plums after she got a little older. June's father would move them around following the work. She fondly told us stories of how her mom would sweep the dirt floor in their house tent until it was clean enough to eat off of. After the work was done they loaded everything and everybody up in their old car and moved on the next place where they could find work. Then her father caught the fever as in gold fever and took them to where ever he thought gold might be. He never struck it rich but they did weather the Great Depression.
Even though June had a vagabond lifestyle as a young girl, she always spoke very affectionately about her childhood and family. She loved her Father and Mother dearly. She adored the fact that she lived in the woods and told stories on how she wander into the forest and made friends with squirrels and raccoons. This turned into a lifelong love of animals. Even though the family was dirt poor in her early years, she always proudly announced how her Momma always had good food on the table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A couple of June's favorite recipes of her mothers were Vinegar Pie because vinegar was cheaper than lemons and was "just as good" and Pie Dough Cinnamon Rolls.
It was her brother Russ that introduced her to her first husband, Howard Spindler. Howard was Russ's good friend and June was just the pesky little sister who followed them around. Soon, Howard decided that June was more than the "little sister" of his friend and asked her out. That's all it took Howard was head over heels, he worshipped June. They married in 1940 when June was 17 years old. June had what would be her only child, a girl they named Beverly Jean in 1941. They were living in California during this time.
In the early stages of their marriage June held down a few different jobs, including making jeans at Rough Riders and the United States Armory assembling bombs for the World War II war effort. Twelve years into her marriage her husband Howard died from heart disease, the year was 1952.
June remarried to a man named Melvin Young . After her daughter Beverly moved out to follow her road in life, June and Mel stayed in California. They survived a house fire and then eventually made a move to Missouri. In Missouri they bought a farmhouse and raised cattle. Life on that Missouri farm was not kind to June, due to Mel's issue with alcohol. Mel died in 1975 and June then moved to Utah to live with Mel's sister and her husband. June never remarried after Mel. June later moved back to California and then in 1997 she moved to Washington to live with her daughter. Unfortunately, the last two years of June's life was spent in a nursing home due to her failing health.

June died September 9th , 2012 at the age of 88. She is survived by her daughter Beverly, her grandson Chris with his fiancé Jillian, her granddaughter Teri with her husband Kirk, her grandson Kelly, her great grandson Greg (Chris's son), her great granddaughter Niki (Teri & Kirk's daughter) with her husband Nick, her great great grandson Grayson(Niki & Nick's son), her sister Shirley, and her friends Donna and Steve.
Her presence will be missed. May God bless her and keep her soul.
