Lynn M. Oliver 58, of Redmond, Washington, formerly of Urbana, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on November 18, 2012.at 11:30pm at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Washington as the result of a massive pulmonary embolus with his wife Sandy at his side. Lynn was born October 10, 1954 to Marvin Leslie (Lester) and Helen Bennett Oliver in Bellefontaine, Ohio. He lived on a small farm in Rosewood, Ohio until the age of five, when the family moved to Urbana, Ohio.
Lynn graduated as valedictorian of his 1973 West Liberty-Salem High School graduating class with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average and received a full scholarship to the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering. There he graduated summa cum laude in 1978 with a double degree in chemical and electrical engineering, having placed second in his chemical engineering class.
Lynn married his high school sweetheart, Sandra (Sandy) June McCullough on July 31, 1976. Upon the completion of his degrees, Lynn was employed by International Business Machines in Lexington, KY. He was working in IBM's printer
and printer supply division when it was sold in 1991 to an investment firm and eventually became known as Lexmark Corporation. In 1993 Lynn was hired as a software engineer by the Microsoft Corporation headquartered in Redmond, Washington and moved his family to the Pacific Northwest.
He retired in 1999 and embarked on a new vocation as a bluegrass musician. Lynn formed a 5-man bluegrass band called Ryegrass consisting of fiddle, mandolin, bass, guitar and (his specialty) banjo/steel guitar which played for Puget Sound bluegrass music festivals, farmers markets, wedding receptions, corporate events, private parties and other occasions.
Lynn was preceded in death by his father Lester and is survived by his wife, Sandy, sons Stephen Patrick (28) and Daniel Keith (14), all of Redmond, WA; mother Helen Oliver Stemm and stepfather Larry Stemm of Springfield, OH; sister Holly (Wally) Ratliff of Springfield, OH; brothers James (Myra) Oliver of Urbana, OH and Michael (Della) Oliver of Xenia, OH; stepbrother Greg Stemm of Gulfport, Fl; nephew Sean (Debra) Oliver of Shasta Lake, CA; and niece Charity Oliver of Xenia, OH.
I worked with Lynn at IBM and chanced to google him today because I happen to be making a decision at work based upon a principle he taught me. He taught me to let my charges test their limits and be ready to pick up the pieces. It has been one of the most valuable lessons of my professional life. Regrettably out of touch, I didn't even know he had been bitten by the bluegrass bug. I have thought of Lynn often, fondly, and will continue to do so all the more now that he is gone. Godspeed Lynn. Love and Admiration from me dave.
Even as teenagers sitting next to each other in band, I don't think I've ever known such genuine brilliance enveloped with such a gentle, self effacing, and kind spirit.
