How Did We Do?

Grenfall "Sonny" Dalgleish passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2012 at Aegis in Kirkland, his home for the last two years. Sonny was born on Sept 25, 1918 in Andover, South Dakota. He moved to the greater Seattle area with his family in 1923 in a Model T Ford, traveling on the Old Redmond Brick Road to reach their destination.

Sonny graduated from Seattle's Garfield High School in 1936, where he excelled in both academics and sports. In 1941 he met his lifelong love, Virginia "Ginny" at a high school dance, spotting her at the top of the stairs in a "beautiful white dress". They married in 1942.

In 1944 during WWII, Sonny entered the navy. He worked as ship fitter and welder on battleships both in the Bremerton shipyard and on the open seas. In 1946, he was honorably discharged from the navy.

Sonny started a septic tank manufacturing and installation company, "Northrup Concrete Products" in Kirkland in 1947, where he worked for the next 32 years. It was at the family home in Houghton (now Kirkland), that Sonny and Ginny raised their four children, Steve, Kathy, Dan and Mary, living there from 1950 until Ginny's death in 2010. Sonny was a loving and involved father, always taking time out of his day to spend time with his children--and grandchildren! He played sports with them, watched their baseball, lacrosse and soccer games, helped with their homework, took them on fishing trips and engaged in variety of other fun activities.

Sonny's faith was also important to him. He attended church regularly with his family. He was an active member of St Paul's Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and was superintendent of the Sunday school program for many years. After his retirement, he and Ginny attended All Saints Lutheran Church until her death two years ago.

Sonny was a funny, gregarious, outgoing man with a happy disposition, an honest character and a heart of gold. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need of help. He loved to travel, sing in the barbershop quartet, work in the yard, read, work the NYT crossword puzzle and watch soccer on the soccer channel. He also loved to fish! He spent many happy hours fishing on lakes in Canada and at his treasured Point No Point.

Many beloved family members survive Sonny. His children: Steven Dalgleish (Susan), Katherine Vincent (Michael), Daniel Dalgleish (Teri) and Mary Knudsen; grandchildren: Patrick Vincent, Zachary Vincent, Kirsten Haines (Gary), Jessica Sattari (Maziar), Erik Knudsen and Katherine Knudsen; great grandchildren: Alec, Gavin, Hunter, Olivia, Noah and Sasha. One sister, Myrtis Reed, also survives him. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, his grandson, Christian Knudsen and his two sisters', Averill and June.

What an inspiration to read about "Sonny's" life. The legacy he leaves behind in his children and their families is a gift to all of us. The lives he touched as he served God is a testimony to his faithfulness. I can heard God saying, "well done, good and faithful servant". May God's peace and presence surround his loved ones in a very real well as they grieve this great loss.
