Margaret H. Smith was born on April 15, 1914 in Yakima, Washington. She passed away February 9, 2013 in Kirkland, Washington two months shy of 99. Her husband of almost 62 years, Beverly C Smith, predeceased her on November 4, 1999. She is survived by 40 family members, including six daughters, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Her family was very important to her and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a pivotal part of her life.
She graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in 1935 and a BA in Library Studies in 1936. She worked in libraries, both public and academic, for many years, starting at age 14 and continuing until she retired when her 3rd daughter was born. She worked at the University of Washington and the University of Oregon libraries, as well as the Yakima Valley and Port Townsend Public libraries, among others.
Volunteerism was a big part of her life, including 50 years as a Girl Scout leader and event organizer. She also volunteered for many years at Treasure House in Camas, WA representing St. Ann's Episcopal Church, and was an aid in a kindergarten class while in her mid-80s. Through the Girl Scouts she touched many girls' lives and gained much enjoyment from the various troops she was involved with over the years.
She enjoyed a wide variety of outdoor activities throughout her life, including fishing, camping, and hiking. She started these hobbies in her childhood with her family, since both her parents loved to explore. She was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables, and continued to hone her gardening skills until the end of her life by growing both in pots on her deck. She loved to play Bridge and belonged to multiple Bridge Clubs throughout the years. She also loved travel of any kind and to anywhere, and visited much of the United States and other countries, including Mexico, Canada, Egypt, Greece, and Great Britain.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
