On May 14, 2013 Pamela's life ended peacefully at age 51, after a brave, long stuggle with Multiple System Atrophy. She is survived by her husband Ken, her children Alex, Joe, and Nia. Also by her parents Elizabeth and Steven Deutsch of Eugene/Seattle; sister Jennifer Bender and family of Seattle, brother Peter Deutsch and family of Felton, CA and many uncles, aunts, and cousins. Family was always of central importance to Pamela and she was much loved by her family and friends.
She grew up in Eugene, Oregon, graduated from S. Eugene High School, received her B.S. from Earlham College where she was nurtured by Quaker values. She then went to work in the U.S. Congress and for some years in the Massachusets Health Dept. in environmental health. She did graduate work at Harvard and then accepted a NIOSH fellowship to do her M.S. at the University of Washington in occupational and environmental health. She worked for WA OSHA and Puget Sound Energy, and helped start WASHCOSH.
Friends from her youth and college remained close and spent time with her in the years after her neurological disease disabled her. She so appreciated all of the family and friends, locally in Seattle, and from around the country, who came to visit in recent years.
Pamela was an extraordinary person who always gave to others, was devoted to her family and friends, and all of the efforts in which she was engaged to help make the world a better place. Her life ended too soon, but she was a beacon that will continue to shine in the lives of all she touched.
