How Did We Do?

Art Case peacefully entered Heaven on Tuesday, October 7th. He was 92.

Art was born in Newberg, Oregon on March 8th, 1922 to Covil and Hazel Case. He was raised in Salem, Oregon, the oldest child of three boys. He attended Salem High School and Willamette University before entering the US Navy in 1944. During the war, he married his sweetheart, Caroyl Snyder.

In 1947, he returned to Willamette University to finish his degree. After that, he and Caroyl moved their family to Kennewick, Washington, where Art worked for 27 years as a research scientist (chemist) at Hanford, and he and Caroyl raised three sons: Steven, Philip, and Michael.

After retiring, he and Caroyl took their travel trailer to the Mexican border and started driving north along the coast, looking for a place to retire. When they reached Florence, Oregon, they knew they were home.

As the years went by, Caroyl became a victim of Alzheimer's disease. Art took wonderful care of her and, through his actions, showed his family what devotion "in sickness and in health" really meant. Caroyl passed away in 2010.

Art remained very active in Florence; He volunteered with the Memory Loss Respite Care Center, the Dial-A-Ride program, and the Senior Meals Program. In addition, he was active in his church (Florence United Methodist) and in his neighborhood (Greentrees Village).

Art moved to Renton, Washington in the fall of 2013 to be closer to his sons. He lived in an apartment in Chateau at Valley Center and loved the people and activities there. He was the busiest guy around. In August of 2014, he suffered a major stroke that took away his ability to communicate, but did not take away his constant smile. He passed away peacefully on October 7th, 2014 with his family at his side.

Art loved playing bingo, watching movies, learning about history, and telling jokes. The activity that gave him the most joy, however, was being with his family.

He is survived by sons Phil (Sandra) of Renton, WA and Mike (Anita) of Richland, WA, and grandchildren Steven Jr. "Chip" (Bethany) of Imperial Beach, CA, Rob (Laurie) of Newfields, NH, Michael of Redmond, WA, Holly (Aaron Simon) of Leavenworth, WA, and Sarah (Chris Eldridge) of Covington, WA. In addition, he leaves behind a legacy that includes eight great-grandchildren.

Art is preceded in death by his wife Caroyl and by his son and daughter-in-law Steve and Jacky of Novato, CA.

Art always loved the words of his favorite hymn, How Great Thou Art, which sings:

When Christ shall come,
With shouts of acclamation,
And take me Home,
What joy shall fill my heart!

His family rejoices in the knowledge that today Art is with his Lord and Savior in Heaven.
