How Did We Do?

Gary passed away on May 9th at the age of 74 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Gary grew up in Ephrata, WA, the younger son of Brownie and Helen Walcott. As a young teenager, the family lived in Lahore, Pakistan, where his father, a geologist, worked on major irrigation projects. It was during this time that Gary developed a life long interest in foreign cultures and travel. He returned to Ephrata to finish his senior year of high school and later he took a break from college at WSU to serve 2 years in the Peace Corp in India. Throughout his life he maintained close friendships in India and traveled back there several times.
Gary earned a Masters degree from Thunderbird School of International management. While working in the international division of Johnson Wax he met his wife Sally. his career took them to New Zealand and New York until they decided to settle in Seattle to raise two wonderful sons, Nathan and Chris. Gary was a devoted father, always there for his sons whether coaching their sports teams or watching from the sidelines, teaching life's lessons or healing life's bruises.
Retirement afforded Gary and Sally the opportunity to travel the world - often with family and friends - revisiting favorite places and exploring new places. However, the best times were often quiet conversations with friends. He had an active sense of curiosity and an insatiable desire to learn along with a ready smile and wonderful sense of humor.
If the ultimate goal is to make the world a better place for having lived - he certainly accomplished that. he will be missed by all that knew him.
Gary is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sally; son Nathan and his wife Kassia and their 3 sons, Sawyer, Miles, and Teague; and son Chris and his wife Hollie and their daughters, Tayten and Bryn, and son Landon.

CandleI served in the Peace Corps with Gary and always enjoyed his calm demeanor, his laconic humor and his courtesy. I always thought of him as a civic minded Cary Grant, urbane but compassionate. We are all sorry to have lost him from our ranks. Sincerely, Kathleen McCreary
