How Did We Do?

Many words can be used to describe Mark Hulin; visionary, entrepreneurialist, creative, passionate, charismatic, avid sports fan, with a heart for Christ and helping others. His enthusiasm was often difficult to contain as he focused his energies on many things simultaneously. His passion was contagious. His charismatic nature was obvious from the moment you met him. He would retain special memories with each interaction whether it be a new person or an old time friend. At different times, he would pull from those memories and let that person know he was thinking of them. He had an uncanny way of making someone feel special once they held a position of importance to him. He left a lasting impression, even if your only interaction with him was for just a few minutes.

Still, he suffered from bipolar depression. Those closest to him felt it on a daily basis. It is our greatest weakness that is often also our greatest strength. It is because of characteristics of his bipolarness that Mark had the freedom to express his entrepreneurial, creative side. As he was not afraid of failure, he was free to "push the envelope" in new directions.

Mark was given opportunities to push boundaries, share his vision and foster his passionate, sports enthusiast mentality throughout his career. Mark helped launch ESPN as a investigative journalist in his early career. He went on to launch ESPN Radio, and later the website for not only ESPN, but also NFL and NASCAR. He took a hiatus to write a book for God (this book is still in the works, as final editing needs to be completed). Mark's most recent venture is a website on the merging relationship between sports, wine, and celebrities with a heavy emphasis on how these three things play a role in charity and giving back.

Mark had a determined spirit he held onto until the end. Even after being diagnosed earlier this year with late stages of throat cancer that had metastasized and was given very poor odds, Mark maintained the belief he would beat it. Through it all, Mark knew God would take him on God's schedule. We trusted our faith that God's Will be done. On October 2nd, Mark laid to rest for the final time after listening to Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up" with his fiancée. He is now singing for eternity with the Lord.

Mark is loved by many and will be missed tremendously by his family and friends.

Mark is survived by his longtime partner and fiancée, Carrie Eugene, his two biological children, Brian and Casey Hulin, his stepchildren, Cygourney Eugene and Kyle Walls-Eugene, his three sisters, Karen Leveque, Cris Rancourt, and Nicole Hulin, and multiple nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by both parents, Joni and Howard "Cole" Hulin.
