Marion Patten Bruce McCleary (1924-2018)
Marion Patten Bruce McCleary, 94, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2018 in Everett, WA.
Born in Deland, Florida on October 11, 1924, she was the daughter of Richard Patten Bruce and Frances Bonner Roberts Bruce.
Marion grew up in Columbus, Georgia before moving to Atlanta where she attended Washington Seminary. After graduating high school, she attended the University of Georgia receiving a B.A. in Sociology in 1946. At UGA, she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority.
On December 10, 1949, Marion married James David McCleary of Memphis, TN and they enjoyed a long and happy marriage until Dave's death in 2002. After raising her family, she returned to work with the State of Georgia for ten years until her retirement in 1991. Following her retirement, she was a regular volunteer at the Cathedral of St Philip Thrift House, as well as an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for 54 years. Marion was a devout Episcopalian and a member of the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. During her later years, she lived in Pawleys Island, SC and Everett, WA to be near family.
Marion is survived by her daughter Anne (Dave) Shelhorn of Everett, WA, her son David (Pam) McCleary of Roswell, GA, two granddaughters - Sarah and Lindsay McCleary, and many more nieces, nephews and their families who adored her. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Frances Bruce Powers and her brother Richard Patten Bruce, Jr.
Always with a twinkle in her eye, Marion was mischievous, full of adventure, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved her family and friends, bridge and University of Georgia football, not necessarily in that order. Her positive outlook on life cheered up all around her. Marion was a loyal and devoted friend to many and will be missed by all who knew her.
Marion's memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of St Philip April 26th, 2019 and her ashes will be interred in the Cathedral's memorial garden.
