How Did We Do?

Doris June Maestas passed away on March 27th, 2020 at the age of 97 years. Doris was born in Pratt, Kansas on December 16th, 1922 to George and Alice (Schouten) Millard.

Doris married Thomas E. Maestas on October 2nd, 1942. They were married in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was nighttime and the only minister they could find was the butcher. Well, that wouldn't do and having blood on his apron didn't help! The minister told them that they could go to his house across the street to get married. He woke his wife and she helped make the ceremony very nice.

Doris was a homemaker raising 8 children, Lynda, Mary, Bonnie, James, Gail, Teresa, John and Katherine. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren and her brothers, George and Lawrence Millard.

She very much loved having her family around her, travel, painting, crochet, needle point and reading.

She is preceded in death by her parents George and Alice, her sisters Ethel, Bernice, Anna, Joyce and her husband Tom.

At this time there will be no services. We will be planning a celebration of life at a later date.

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"
