How Did We Do?

Alan (Al) Robert Salm, 52, of Seattle, WA passed on May 5, 2021, after a courageous and graceful struggle with gastric cancer. Al was welcomed into the world on June 5, 1968 by Peter P and Lillian M Salm. He was born and raised in New Holstein, Wisconsin, but Seattle and the Pacific Northwest captured his heart while studying Technical Theatre at the University of Washington in Seattle in the early 90s.

Al married his soulmate and love of his life, Paula Rojo-Vega, on September 1, 2002, and they welcomed their son Lucas Salm-Rojo into the world in 2006. He loved sports and salvaged some of those Wisconsin roots in being a die-hard Green Bay Packers fan. Al also loved the outdoors, hiking, camping in his VW camper van, skiing, traveling, or walking on the beach. He made the most of every moment. In recent years he exchanged his lifelong running addiction into mountain biking so he and his son could share the love of it together. Time spent with family and friends were essential to Al, but his time spent with Lucas and Paula is what most filled his heart.

Al's expertise brought him success managing and leading exhibit design at Pacific Studios and CREO, Inc, until his retirement in April 2021. He had enormous pride in his work and felt a personal connection to the projects he worked on whether it was new visitor centers at national parks like Yellowstone or projects like the US Olympic and Paralympic Museum. Al loved to create, and that love made it possible for him to personally renovate their beautiful home. He and Paula loved to gather friends (their Seattle family) for barbecues, between them making a welcome place for all. His sense of humor and easy manner will be missed by all who knew him.

Al is survived by his wife Paula and son Lucas. He is further survived by siblings, Ann (Bill) Loehrke, Appleton, WI; Annette (Penny Guptill) Salm, Appleton, WI; and Paul (Cathy) Salm, Bloomer WI, and their children, his nephews, Joe (Erin) Salm, Matthew (Regan) Salm and John (Megan) Salm, along with great nephews Daniel and Jack. Also surviving are his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Valentina and Grinor Rojo-Vega Santiago, Chile, and brother-in-law, Eduardo Lobos. Seattle, WA, and many other family members and dear friends.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

No immediate services are planned. A celebration of Al's life will likely occur sometime in August. Memorial donations may be directed to No Stomach For Cancer, a Wisconsin based stomach cancer organization. (https://www.nostomachforcancer.org/donate)

Al's family wishes to thank Dr Henry Li, the staffs at the Polyclinic and Swedish-First Hill campus for their incredible care during our journey. Al's siblings want to thank Paula for her extraordinary care for their baby brother when they were unable to be there to help.

Fly high Al and we look forward to seeing you when we are reunited. We love you!

Dear Paula and Lucas and all extended & real family members who loved and knew Al.
Al helped me navigate my early Microsoft years while I was at TPN and he was at PNTA, that's how I 1st met him. Later he found jobs for me at Pacific Studios when I needed tiding over. He was such an inspiration with his work ethic, he sense of humor and his friendship
I will always remember:
attending Al and Paula's wedding - which was beautiful
listening to him talk about his great love of Paula's family and time spent in Chile
and I will always remember when he called me to tell me you two were pregnant with Lucas, I used to tell him that of all people he and Paula should be parents, on the phone he's opening line was "You have to guess my big news, we are doing what you always said we should do".
Taken way too soon, I will always remember Al.
With deepest sympathy
Cynthia Bishop
