How Did We Do?

Julie Ann Reeves was born August 17, 1941, to Garland and Wanda Reeves
in Walla Walla, Washington. She was raised by her grandparents Grace and
Caleb Alexander on a small farm in the small community of Touchet,
Washington. She had a strong work ethic and credited that to growing up on
this farm. Julie graduated from Touchet High School in 1959; there were
eight in her graduating class. She attended Pacific Lutheran University from
1959 - 1961 and then transferred and graduated from the University of
Washington in 1963 with a degree in English Literature. Over the years
wherever she lived Julie put her English degree to good use as a teacher and
later as a technical writer. In 1962 she married William "Bill" Hockett who
was in the United States Air Force. They had two daughters, Elise, born in
1967 and Christa, born in 1969.

As an Air Force family, there were many moves across the United States
including assignments in Washington State, New York, Florida and
California. Every move provided an opportunity to sightsee and visit our
great National Parks. These many car trips were opportunities for family
sing-alongs, as Julie had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. Pop and folk
songs from numerous past eras of music were always favorites. When Bill
retired from the Air Force in 1982 the family settled in Bellevue,
Washington; the Pacific Northwest was always home.

Now in a permanent place, Julie joined Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. She
was very involved in church life, singing in the choir and participating in
many projects and causes. She was most proud of the Church's work in
Tanzania, East Africa, supporting girls' education and medical treatments for
children. Julie was part of the church mission teams of 2012 and 2016.
Julie was always interested in people and world cultures and her faith guided
her to extend a helping hand and hospitality to many over the years. She
hosted exchange students and touring cultural groups from Germany, Taiwan
and East Africa. Julie and Bill took new immigrants from West Africa and
Eastern Europe under their wings to help them acclimate to their new
country.

Family life was most important to Julie. She loved spending time with her
girls and grandkids. She enjoyed the outdoors and the family went on
numerous summer camping trips. Summer outings were also spent at Mount
Hood, Oregon and Pacific Beach, Washington. There were many family
get-togethers with birthdays, picnics and dinners. She always took an active
role in her kids and grandkids lives in school and sports activities. Any
occasion would be a reason to celebrate.

In June of 2022 Julie was diagnosed with ALS which is a disease of the
nervous system. She never complained as the disease robbed her of control
over her body. Julie passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday,
May 27th. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill, her daughters,
Elise Page and Christa Minneman, and her five grandchildren, Celia Aiken,
Alexander Aiken, Parker Minneman, Jenna Minneman, and Brady
Minneman.

She made the world a better place.

A celebration of life service will be held in Bellevue at Cross of Christ
Lutheran Church on Saturday, June 24 at 3:30 PM. A reception at the church
will follow. Welcome all. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Julie's
name to the ALS Association.

Julie lived across the street from us in Touchet. I loved watching her practice cheerleading so much that I wanted to change my name to Julie. She was a special woman.
