He was born June 8th, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and passed away June 25th, 2023, in Bellevue, Washington.

He received B.S (1950) and M.S. (1957) degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D (1965) in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Reid's pioneering work in ultrasound imaging and tissue characterization garnered national and international recognition. Together with John J. Wild, M.D., he achieved a breakthrough in 1952 by introducing a non-invasive technique for breast cancer diagnosis using high-frequency ultrasound waves. His expertise and dedication in this field have laid the foundation for advancements that continue to benefit countless lives.

Professor Reid was highly admired and respected by his peers. He was extremely supportive of all of his colleagues, especially younger faculty, and made a real effort to understand the concerns of those working with him. He was always available for professional and personal assistance. As an exceptional teacher, pivotal mentor to many, and globally recognized scholar, Professor Reid joined Drexel University's School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems in 1980. As the inaugural endowed Calhoun Chair Professor, he guided and inspired numerous students who now carry his legacy forward. Dr. Reid also worked at the University of Washington (1966-1971) and Providence Hospital (1971-1981).

Jon had a full, fun life. He loved camping, hiking, skiing, sailing, folk dance, cooking and model railroads. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a creative and curious problem solver, and builder of boats and homes. He will be deeply missed by family, students, and friends.
