How Did We Do?

Barbara passed away peacefully on April 7, 2024. She was 84 years old and survived the unpredictable neurodegenerative disease, Multiple Sclerosis, for nearly 60 years with remarkable grace. She will be remembered for her positive attitude and unwavering perseverance despite an increasingly uncooperative brain and body. Barbara never complained about her loss of independence or confined life. She lived vicariously through others with her insatiable curiosity and quiet spirituality. Barbara loved her feline companions, baseball, fitness, ocean swimming, music, audiobooks, her daughter's genealogy discoveries, and her children's culinary skills.

Born to Anita (née Fessel) and Marvin Dodge on May 29, 1939, in Milwaukee, Barbara and her family moved West to rural Dripping Springs, Arizona when she was about 10 years old. She had many fond memories of growing up on a ranch. She graduated from Hayden High School in Hayden, Arizona in 1957. She was a decorated synchronized swimmer and attended nursing school at Idaho State University in Pocatello where she was crowned Military Ball Queen. She continued her education throughout her life. She raised her children in Southern California and moved over the years to be near her children and grandchild. She worked administratively for Garden Grove Police Department, and she cherished her time working with the law enforcement community.

In 1959, Barbara had a brief marriage to childhood family friend, John Richards, and they had a son, John Robert. Then, in 1961, Barbara married John "Fred" Anderson and they shared two children, Mary Kimberly, and John "Andy" Frederick.

Barbara is predeceased by her parents, husbands, in-laws, and a precious grandson, John Frederick Anderson. Her three children survive her: John Richards of Nevada, Mary Anderson (Peter Goodwin) of Idaho, and John (Amy) Anderson of Florida as well as her treasured grandson, Sean Anderson, and a step grandson, Patrick Darden. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Kathleen Crawford of Texas, and her two children, Jeffrey (Cary) Crawford of Texas, and Valerie (Matthew) Miller of Arizona and their 9 daughters. Barbara's former daughter-in-law, Kimberly (Benny) Garrett of Georgia, also survives her.

Barbara's children are grateful to all the friends and caregivers who touched Barbara's life especially over the last 10 years in the Seattle area. A special thank you to Lona and Dan Rus, and Evergreen Hospice, for seeing the end of our mom's life through with profound dignity.
