On November 16, 2024 Lawrence Elliott Hoyt or Larry as he was called, passed after a short illness. He was born in upstate New York. His father was William L Hoyt and his mother Eleanor Fitch Hoyt. He was one of three sons growing up in Pasadena, California. He attended Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1941 for high school from where he joined the Navy after graduation in June of 1943. He enlisted in the V-12 officer training program and was sent to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and after freshman year to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico as part of the ROTC program. He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Civil Engineering Corps upon graduation on October 20, 1945. He was assigned to the Naval Public Works office in Boston, Massachusetts and discharged in April of 1946. He enrolled in the Stanford Graduate Engineering school in the fall of 1946 and received his Masters degree in Civil Engineering Economics in April of 1948. He joined Southern Pacific Railroad Co. in San Francisco that same month and for the next thirty eight years served in various capacities in a number of western states. While initially he worked for the railroad directly, gradually he became more involved in subsidiary operations including Land Grant property management, Forestry developments and then the large scale Pipeline network which Southern Pacific put in place. He was active in many community affairs including the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce where he was a director, and the Saint Francis Hospital where he was President of the Board. He also headed the Bay Area fund drive for the United Way in 1970. He retired in 1984 to a small ranch on the Applegate river in Southern Oregon and in 1998 came to the Seattle area living in Kirkland from 2006. Larry enjoyed outdoor activities and sports all his life. These included hiking and mountain climbing, marathon running, racquetball, and in retirement, tennis. He is survived by his daughter Lisa Hoyt, three granddaughters Samantha Hoyt Schmid, Jennica Kantak, Melissa Chase and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Alberta and daughter Susan Frank.
