How Did We Do?

Velma June (Merry) Palin, 81, Passed away on December 5, 2025, in Lynnwood Washington.

Velma was born on September 26, 1944, in Seattle, Washington. She was the daughter of Curtis and Bonnie June Merry. They moved to Dell Rapids, SD, in 1946 where her family grew to include two brothers. In 1954 they returned to Seattle. Velma was raised in a home rooted in faith and community. She was brought up in the American Baptist Church where she sang in the youth choir. Her early involvement in church and youth groups helped shape a lifelong appreciation for fellowship and music.

Velma attended Butler Junior High School and graduated from Shoreline High School. She continued her education at Everett Community College where she briefly pursued Dental Hygienist School. Over the years had a diverse and dedicated career that included positions at Woolworths, NBC, Pepe's Mexican Restaurant in West Seattle, Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant in Lake City, and QFC where she retired. Her work life reflected her adaptability and commitment to serving others across numerous vocations.

She shared her life with her beloved husband Ronald "TACO" Palin, who preceded her in death. Velma is Lovingly remembered by her brothers Richard (Linda) and Arthur Bruce (Terry), as well as nephews Scott (Wendy), Doug (Tay), Todd (Molly) Niece Jill (Adrian), and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She will also be forever in the hearts of her good friends Sharon (Chuck) and the Lake City Western Vigilantes & Sidekicks.

Velma & Ron were members of the Lake City Western Vigilantes & Sidekicks for many years. Although they never had children of their own, they helped support hundreds of youths through organizations such as the North Queens Drill Team, and La Senoritas. The Sidekicks raise money selling buttons and trinkets at parades. (Velma began doing parades while living in Dell Rapids, SD as a young girl twirling a baton.) These drill teams are enjoyed everywhere around the northwest. One of Velma's favorite events as a member of the Sidekicks was the Sweetheart Dinner & Fund Raiser Auction every February.

Velma had a special fondness for Pugs. Her close companion Midgie would go everywhere with her. If Velma saw another pug she would stop and talk to it and its owner. That sometimes sparked long-time friendships for both Velma and Midgie. This simple joy spoke volumes about her warmth and ability to find delight in everyday encounters.

I will miss our phone calls, visits and the FaceTime on Glenda's phone during her many visits with you. Thinking of you and Ron. Miss you sweetie.
