Carol Ann Liden Bosworth died Tuesday, Feb 3, in the early hours. She was 85. She is survived by her husband of 63 years David Bosworth, children Donna Bosworth Andrews and Douglas Liden Bosworth, and grandchildren Ben Andrews, Declan Andrews, and Brandon Bosworth. She is also survived by many who called her their "other mom."
Carol was born on Nov 18, 1940, to Carl Gilbert (Gib) and Viola Evelyn (Vi) Liden, in Denver CO. A brother Richard (Dick) followed 4 years later. Gib and Vi were from Leadville CO and the family maintained ties with Leadville for many years. When Carol was still young, Gib moved the family to Sacramento to work as a civil engineer for the State of California.
Carol excelled academically, and she was also very athletic. She studied physical education at Sacramento State College, where her favorite sport was field hockey. She also enjoyed Girl Scouts throughout her school years. In 1961 she was chosen to join a 6-week study abroad program in Japan with the Experiment in International Living, an experience she long remembered as a formative time in her life. That was also the year she met Dave Bosworth at Bear Paw Girl Scout Camp near Lake Tahoe - she was a Program Director and he was a handyman and truck driver. Dave and Carol married a week after her graduation in 1962. They made their home first in San Francisco, where Carol taught at James Lick Jr High School. They later moved to Sacramento, and finally settled in the Seattle area in 1972. They joined Overlake Park Presbyterian Church and Carol remained a pillar of the church community till near the end.
Carol loved arts and crafts and was a skilled sketcher and painter. In college she learned to throw ceramics, and many of her beautiful creations are still in use by her family. She taught herself to batik, and created large-scale batiks that she sold through a Sacramento gallery. Over the years she tried many different crafts and art forms including wood carving, clay sculpture, candle making, photography, and building a doll house to scale. She loved doing all these activities with friends, and teaching her daughter's girl scout troop and others.
Carol was a community maker, a leader, and a force to be reckoned with. Her passions focused on women and girls - she led her daughter's girl scout troop for 12 years, started and built women's groups at her church, and was a board member of Sojourner Place for Women in Transition. She also served on the board for the King County Board for Developmental Disabilities. Donations may be made in Carol's name to: Jubilee Women's Center, 620 18th Ave E, Seattle WA 98112.
