Duane R. Messier, aged 75, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, at 1:55 PM. He leaves behind a legacy defined by profound kindness, a brilliant spark of wit, and a beautiful, unique way of looking at the universe.

Duane was truly a one-of-a-kind soul; those who knew him best agree they had never met anyone quite like him. He possessed a delightfully silly sense of humor, was ueffortlessly funny, and was always remarkably quick with his wit. His laughter and lighthearted spirit brought immediate warmth to those around him, perfectly balancing his deeply contemplative nature.

Throughout his life, Duane was a man who helped others unconditionally. He gave his time and his heart freely, driven by a simple but unshakeable core philosophy that he shared with the world: "Just be kind. Kindness rules, there is no excuse for anything else."

His kindness extended into his lifelong passion for astrology, where he spent decades studying the skies and writing detailed charts to bring clarity, comfort, and guidance to family, friends, and anyone seeking a path forward. Duane also found deep expression through his hands, crafting beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry out of natural elements like stones, shells, and wood. Through his art, he turned the raw gifts of the earth into lasting treasures for others to cherish.

Duane possessed a rare capacity for presence and mindfulness, which guided him even as he faced his illness. He could sit and stare at nature for hours, completely at peace, finding immense meaning where others might look past it. He had the gentle soul of an artist and a philosopher, able to discover profound beauty in the quietest moments--even in the elegant, simple way a wilted flower dropped its petals.

The profound impact of his presence is best captured by those who shared his journey from the very beginning. As a lifelong childhood friend and neighbor recently shared: "He had such a good heart, something I think too too few appreciated or understood. We shared our childhood together, and I know that I would not be who I am had I never known him. I owe Duane a lot just for him being himself."

Duane was deeply loved and will always be missed by his family, who meant everything to him. He is survived by his brother, Gordon Messier Jr., and his sister, Nancy Messier. He held an especially deep affection for his two nieces, Tasha and Jade. Duane's warmth lives on through the next generations: Tasha's children, his three grand nephews Romeo, Praise, and Christos; and Jade's children, his two grand nieces Deja and Aaliyah.

There are no formal services planned at this time. Duane always believed in quiet grace and direct impact. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that cards be sent to Kaiser Permanente (Northgate branch) of Washington state, care of his physician, Dr. Angela Li, and their Hospice program. Duane's family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Li and the hospice care team, whom they recognize as the real heroes who walked alongside him.

Duane lived authentically, laughed easily, and loved deeply. Though his earthly journey has concluded, the guidance he mapped in his charts, the jewelry he shaped from the earth, and his simple mandate to "just be kind" will continue to illuminate the paths of everyone he left behind.
